Our own Daniel Greear was named the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) High School Player of the Week. This is an honor our entire region has only known a couple of times before. We are so proud of our scholastic team, and Daniel is one of our best.
Below is the article posted to NAQT's social media outlets:
What makes them a great quiz bowl player?
Daniel Greear is an exceptional Scholastic Bowl player because of his unmatched dedication and drive. As his coach, I have never had a player as committed as Daniel. He consistently goes above and beyond, studying extensively to expand his already deep knowledge across a wide range of topics. His passion for learning and his determination to be the best truly set him apart. Daniel’s relentless work ethic and focus make him a standout competitor, and his success is a testament to his unwavering commitment to excellence.
What are their favorite subjects, or studying tips?
From the start, literature was my favorite subject. In just one school year, I worked through the entire high school Quiz Bowl literature canon—though I wouldn’t recommend it! However, throughout my career, driven by both a desire to improve as a player and genuine curiosity, I broadened my knowledge to cover most of the subjects featured in Quiz Bowl questions.
Any advice you or they have for other quiz bowl teams?
Play for fun. Quiz bowl at its heart is a game, and seeing it as mere competition can detract from the overarching theme of the game, which is the celebration of learning and curiosity.
Any other info you'd like to share?
From Daniel: My success would hardly be possible without my little sister (who is also on the team) and our hours spent together studying. I am the product of the many great minds and personalities that form our team, not the embodiment of individual success."
Congratulations Daniel!
